Choosing the right Google Business Profile categories
Your primary category tells Google what you fundamentally are, and it's one of the most influential relevance signals on your whole profile. Getting it specific โ and backing it with the right secondary categories โ is often the fastest, highest-leverage improvement you can make.
Be as specific as possible
Choose the category that most precisely describes your core business, not a broad umbrella. 'Italian restaurant' beats 'restaurant'; 'emergency plumber' beats 'plumber' if that's truly what you are. Specific categories match more of the exact searches your customers type.
Add relevant secondary categories
Secondary categories let you appear for adjacent searches without diluting your primary. Add the ones that genuinely apply to services you offer โ but don't pad the list with categories you can't actually deliver on, which can confuse relevance and mislead customers.
Revisit as Google adds categories
Google's category list changes over time, and a more specific option may appear after you first set up. It's worth checking periodically that your primary is still the best available match.
